Right size for your life.

Is multi-generational living right for you?

Is your home the right size for your family? Life tends to move in phases and each one has different needs. When you are single, you probably don’t need a four bedroom house, when you have kids, a wife, and a dog, it might be time to make that move. When you are an empty-Nester you may want something a little smaller or perhaps you want to move in with your kids.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many unique challenges to our daily lives. Some people are looking to move from the cities to the suburbs, some people are finding they need more space, and some are finding they just want to be with their WHOLE family. I am seeing more and more families enjoying the benefits of multi-generational living. Multi-generational Homes are defined as a household that consists of more that two adult generations living under the same roof, or grandparents living with grandchildren under the age of 25. There are plenty of reasons for the families living under one roof:

Shared Expenses

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic many people have been furloughed, laid off or put out of business. A young family without a steady income will have a difficult time paying for housing. Moving “back home” can be a good option. Household expenses are easily shared, from having grandparents who are willing to watch the kids during the day, to groceries, to heating and electric bills.

Shared Household Responsibilities

When you live with more family members, there are more family members to help out with the household responsibilities.  The younger ones can do the more physically challenging work such as shoveling snow or yard work. While the cooking, cleaning and laundry can be shared or on a rotational schedule to ease everyone’s load.

Strong Relationships and Community

Quality time is one of the largest relationship builders. Multi-generational living offers lifelong memories of living with grandparents and seeing each other on a daily basis. Studies have shown that children who have close relationships with grandparents are often more resilient and have fewer behavioral issues than kids who are separated from the grandparents.  Additionally, grandparents who spend significant time with grand-kids tend to live longer. Plus, who doesn’t want built in babysitters?

Increased Safety

Multi-generational homes can serve as an alternative to assisted living for aging parents. Both generations have peace of mind knowing someone will be there if a parent needs help on a routine basis or during a health emergency. Multi-generational living also provides security for parents by providing additional eyes and ears on their children.
