First impressions have a significant impact on the beginning of a new relationship. The very first handshake and how-do-you-do’s can provide each person with a lot of information about the other right off the bat based on appearance, tone, words, body language, and more.

Checking out a home that you are interested in buying works similarly. The first impression you get of that home can affect how you see it for a long time, even if the rest of the property looks different than the first room that you visited. First impressions can be tough to overcome, which is why they must work FOR you rather than AGAINST you as a seller.

The Entryway

A potential buyer that steps across the threshold of your front door is now in the world that you have created. This is their first impression of the interior, and it may shape how they view the rest of the home no matter how long the tour goes on.

Crafting an entryway that elicits a positive first impression is crucial if you want buyers to consider making an offer on your home. Put yourself in their shoes and enter your home “for the first time.” What immediately stands out to you, either positively or negatively? Where does your eye go first because of a color or design element and does that element add to the space or take away from it? Does the area feel cluttered or is the paint in need of some touching up?

Looking at your home through the eyes of a potential buyer can give you a better perspective on what needs to be done to make the property more appealing. If the goal is a positive first impression of the interior, then the entryway has to fill that role so that the buyer takes that positive feeling with them through the rest of the house.

Other First Impression Goals

While the entryway might have the biggest impact for the home’s interior, other factors can affect a buyer’s first impression of your property. A clean-looking exterior, a well-cared-for lawn, decluttered rooms, and ample lighting can all introduce your home as an attractive property that buyers should learn more about.
